Student Visa (Subclass 500)

  • Participate in an eligible course of study in Australia
  • Travel in and out of Australia
  • Apply this visa can be in or outside Australia
  • You can include family members (partner or dependent child) in your visa application
  • Work up to 40 hours every 2-week period once your course starts
  • This is a temporary visa to study up to 5 years. The type of course and its length will determine the length of stay
  • Primary school children enrolled in years 1-4 will generally only be granted a student visa for a maximum period of 3 years.  
  • The visa costs from AUD620 for the main applicant, unless they are exempt.
  • There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa.
  • You might also have to pay other costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.
  1. If you are a school student (but not participating in a secondary school student exchange program), you must be aged 6 or older to apply for this visa.
    You must also be:
    1. less than 17 years old when you begin Year 9
    2. less than 18 years old when you begin Year 10
    3. less than 19 years old when you begin Year 11 
    4. less than 20 years old when you begin Year 12 
  2. You must include evidence of enrolment in study with your student visa application, or your application will not be valid and can’t be processed.
  3. If you are applying for a student visa and you are under 18 years of age, you must have adequate welfare arrangements in place while you are in Australia.
  4. You might need to provide evidence of your English language skills at the time you submit your visa application.
  5. You and your family members must have and maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay in Australia. To find out the length of coverage you will require, see student visa grant periods. You and your family members must be covered by Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) from an approved Australian health insurance provider, unless an ‘Exception’ applies.
  6. You must have enough money to pay for your stay in Australia.
  7. You must be a genuine temporary entrant and intend to return home after studying in Australia.
  8. You and family members aged 16 years and over who apply for the visa must meet our character requirement.
  9. You and any family members who apply for the visa must meet our health requirement.

Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590)

  • Come to Australia to provide care and support for a student visa holder who is under 18 years of age (or over 18 in exceptional circumstances)
  • Apply this visa can be in or outside Australia
  • Care for more than one student
  • Study an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) for less than 20 hours per week, or any other study or training for no more than 3 months
  • You cannot work.
  • You can stay in Australia until a date specified on your visa grant letter. In deciding this date, we usually consider the length of the student visa holder’s stay or when that student turns 18.
  • If any member of your family unit has not turned 6 years old, you cannot be granted the visa unless exemption
  • The child must meet the same health requirements as you and have health insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia.
  • You can’t include children under 6 years old after you have submitted your application.
  • Children 6 years old or older can come with you but they must apply for their own student visa.
  • The visa costs from AUD620 for the main applicant.
  • There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you.
  • You might also have to pay other costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.
  1. You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa.
  2. You must be:
    • the parent of the student visa holder, or
    • a person who has custody of the student, or
    • a relative of the student, aged 21 years or older, nominated in writing by a parent or person who has custody of the student
  3. You will provide care and support for:
    • a student visa holder who is under 18 years of age or
    • a student visa holder who is 18 years of age or older and needs care and support due to exceptional circumstances
  4. For this visa, a relative is the student’s:
    • parent or step-parent
    • grandparent or step-grandparent
    • sibling or stepsibling
    • aunt, uncle, step-aunt or step-uncle
    • niece, nephew or step-niece or step-nephew
    • partner
    • child or stepchild
  5. You must be able to provide accommodation, general welfare and support to the student.
  6. You must show us evidence that you have enough money to pay for your stay in Australia for meeting the costs and expenses of yourself, your accompanying family members and in most cases, the student visa holder. 
  7. You are personally liable for all your healthcare costs while you are in Australia. Medical insurance helps limit your financial liability. You must maintain adequate health cover for the whole of your stay if you are granted this visa. Your insurance should cover you for medically necessary treatment, including transport.
  8. You must be a genuine temporary entrant. Only intend to stay temporarily in Australia and do the things you are allowed to do on this visa.
  9. You and any family members who apply for the visa with you must meet our health requirement
